Intern: The New Entry Level
There was a time when being an intern was an option. In today’s tough job market, it is almost essential that in order to secure a long and successful career one participates in an internship of some sort. Many colleges and universities have internship programs that puts senior year students in the middle of the career they have selected. This is a great way to make business contacts and hopefully land the first job that will turn into a long and healthy career.
Choosing to work as an intern can be difficult. The job not only offers no pay but also no benefits. Many interns are students who are struggling to work through school while keeping their career hopes alive. At one time in the market, it was possible to gain an entry level position without an intern ship. This is simply impossible any longer. An internship proves to the potential company that someone can work hard for no wages. Not only must an intern prove themselves professional but privately as well. Making long lasting friendships with business executives can be the best benefit of an internship. Many companies cannot afford to hire entry level personnel any longer and therefor use interns to accomplish those jobs.
