Why a College Degree Isn’t Enough Anymore
You spend four years pulling all-nighters, toiling away in the school’s library, and fill notebook after notebook of class notes. Finally graduation day comes and you prepare to find a career in the professional world. This should be easy, right? After all, you have a college degree, which is pretty much a guarantee.
Not necessarily. The old adage of “it doesn’t matter what kind of degree you have as long as you have one,” doesn’t hold much water anymore. Truth of the matter is, it seems like everyone is sporting a college degree nowadays. This is why a college degree isn’t enough anymore.
You can thank your parents and the government for this predicament. A push in the early 90′s by parents to educate America’s youth spurred the government on to provide educational loans and grants to those who qualify. Universities and colleges, seeing dollar signs dancing in front of their eyes, lowered their entrance qualifications, making college eerily comparable to high school.
So what does the new college graduate need to find a job? Experience. If you are interviewing for a position with fifty other candidates, your business degree will not be the push you need to land the job. The company will be looking for those who have some sort of experience in the field.
It may seem like a vicious circle, you need a job to get experience and you need experience to get a job, but don’t discount the idea of volunteer work. Use your time wisely in college, and you’ll automatically be ahead of the pack at graduation.
